Russia, Nicholas II (1825-1855) 1896 25 Roubles (2 1/2 Imperials) Gold, MS60 PCGS
Fr. 171, Y-A65. Obverse: Portrait of youthful Nicholas II faces left; Reverse: Double headed Imperial eagle, four shields on each wing, dual denomination based on 10 Rubles equaling one within beaded circle. Legend with values and date surrounds. Lettered edge gives weight in Russian measurement 7 Zolotnik, 77.4 Dolya, no mint master's initial. From a scant mintage of just 300 pieces, a lustrous Mint State survivor. Careful study finds a few very minor hairlines and microscopic scuffs in the obverse fields, but still a very rare issue that is seldom encountered in this high grade.
