Russia, Nicholas I (1825-1855) 1836-SP 12 Roubles Platinum, Proof 62 Cameo PCGS
Fr. 158, C-179. Obverse: Triple crowned Imperial eagle; Reverse: Date and value in circle, legend surrounds. A beautiful example of this well known rarity with deeply mirrored fields contrasting with nicely frosted devices. For pedigree purposes, a tiny punch resembling the letter 'C' is under the crown and between the eagle's heads on the obverse. Only 11 Proofs were struck in 1836, these being the only emission for the year of 12 rouble coins. Very few have survived, especially this nice. An especially appealing high grade specimen.
- Please note this coin has the C collector's mark or punch, suggesting the Hutten-Czapski collection in Warsaw, which was sold in about 1883/4 to Grand Duke Mikailovich. Therefore it is likely though not certain that this coin is in fact Ex-Mikailovich.
