Russia, Peter I The Great (1682-1725) Gold Medal Dated July 4, 1710
67.74 g., 4.5 cm. Diakov-32.1. A wonderfully detailed gold medal commemorating the capture of Riga, July 4, 1710; the date is a chronogram. Designed by P.H. Muller, a bust of Peter I faces right on the obverse; the reverse exhibits a view of Riga with its fortress under heavy artillery fire, and the inscription below - CAPTURED 8TH DAY OF JULY. For some unknown reason, all of the Riga medals feature this incorrect date. Struck in very high relief with a high, sharp wire edge. A few minor marks and hairlines are seen, however, these hardly detract from the overall beauty of this extremely rare medal. A truly fantastic offering. About Uncirculated
Sold for US$ 234,000 inc. premium
