LITERATURE: The Wyeths; the letters of N. C. Wyeth, 1901-1945. Edited by Betsy James Wyeth, Boston, 1971
In March of 1911 Wyeth purchased the property in Chadds Ford called Rocky Hill where later in that year he was to build a residence. The work is mentioned in Betsy Wyeth's 1971 publication under the present title. It is also noted in an inventory of N.C.Wyeth's works compiled by Carolyn Wyeth and now in the possession of the Brandywine River Museum and Consevancy as #59 and titled Worm Fence. It is thought that the signature has been added at a later date by another hand, perhaps a family member.
This painting is included as number 1517 in the N.C.Wyeth catalogue raisonne database that is being compiled by the Brandywine River Museum and Conservancy, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.
We are grateful to Christine Podmaniczky of the Brandywine River Museum and Conservancy for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
