A U.S. Colt single action army revolver
Serial no. 55680 for 1880, .45 caliber. 7 1/2 inch barrel marked F/D/F/C/ and serial numbered to frame and cylinder. Inspector David F. Chandler's initials also on the cylinder and above the serial number on the frame. Left side of frame with patent dates and US. Fitted with an unmatched pair of elephant ivory grips, one side relief-carved with a steer head, the other with an eagle.
Condition: Very good. Smooth grey metal showing sharp markings and with considerable traces of blue finish: on the barrel around the ejector housing and in the flutes of the housing, as well as at the frame; in the cylinder flutes and with some traces on the triggerguard/gripstrap. Frame and hammer retain much faded casehardening with some areas of color remaining on the front flutes of the frame. The hammer a replaced in the early 20th century.
