An American mounted officer's saber retailed by Wolfe of New York
circa 1820-30
Broad, curved 32 inch blade decorated with etched and engraved floral panels alternating with engraved and gilt panels, one side with a Federal eagle and a panoply of arms, the reverse with a stylized Native American and leaf scrollwork. Spine marked Sold by C. & - D. Wolfe New York. Gilt brass stirrup hilt comprising circular languets molded with eight-pointed stars; faceted quillon, the terminal molded with leafage; knucklebow with spiral decoration and backstrap molded with stars as the languets. Incised bone grip. Gilt brass two-ring scabbard, the lower suspension mount indistinctly stamped, A.T. NEETY (?).
Condition: Blade with dark patina showing spotting, light pitting an some nicks to edge. Hilt retains much gilt finish. Grip showing chipping, cracks and filled areas. Scabbard with scattered dents and marks and retaining generous traces of gilt finish.
