Text in Latin. 173 hand-colored double-page engraved plates mounted on guards depicting 294 cities (one plate being of coats of arms). Folio (420 x 290 mm). Period polished calf, covers gilt paneled with central arabesque motifs. Occasional very light toning from color, wanting Cascaes, Norwich, Bristol and London, two or three spots, one tear just touching image, covers detached, corners restored.
Nearly 300 city views in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Eurasia: Braun and Hogenberg's popular atlas that ran into several editions before 1600. It combines text by Georg Braun and engravings by Franz Hogenberg and Simon Novellanus, many after the drawings of Joris Hoefnagel, the remainder after Abraham Ortelius, Heinrich Rantzau, Jacob van Deventer and others.
