Footnotes

  • The poem, composed by Mao Zedong (1893-1976), the first chairman of People's Republic of China, can be translated as:

"Nine wide rivers over the heartland out-spread; one long, long railroad links north and south like a thread. Shrouded in mists and frizzling rains; tortoise and snake hills hold the great rivers in charm; where the yellow crane in flight leaving for visitors a sight. I pledge with wine the endless flood with rolling waves boils my blood".
