Montesa Trials C0TA 49,
c.1976 Montesa Cota 49 Trials
Frame no. 30M 3059
Engine no. 30M 3059
Montesa was founded in the mid-1940s in Barcelona by Pedro Permanyer and Francisco Bulto. The latter would leave the company in 1958 to found Bultaco but before then his engineering genius had bequeathed Montesa a range of popular two-stroke roadsters. Montesa entered road racing in the early 1950s with a successful 125cc two-stroke single, but its major impact on motorcycle sport would be away from the tarmac, the Scorpion and Capra moto-crossers and the Cota trials being the equal of any of their contemporaries. As well as 250cc and 350cc Cotas, there was also the 49cc Cota 49, produced to cater for 'schoolboy' trials market. This particular Cota 49 was restored for the vendor's daughter by his father-in-law - Vicente Sevilla - and has been used only sparingly, on the last occasion in 2008.
