Provenance: Private UK collection: acquired directly from the artist.
The two still life works by Bakre offered in this sale were gifted by the artist to his accountant in the early 1970s before his return to India. This work then hung in the vendor's office for a number of years.
It is interesting to note that the tiled floor depicted in the background of this work closely resembles the cross-hatched technique much used by Bakre's contemporary Francis Newton Souza in the late 1950s and 60s. Bakre was part of the Progressive Artists' Group in Bombay so it is not unlikely that he took inspiration from Souza's technique.
