Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Private collection, San Francisco, USA: thought to have been acquired directly from the artist and thence by descent.

In his early career, Bose experimented with a variety of indigenous Indian, Japanese, and Chinese techniques and his work consisted of scenes of nature, tribal and village life, as well as devotional subjects. Bose always carried with him a brush, ink and a stack of blank cards, ever sensitive to the stimuli surrounding him and the three works by Nandalal Bose in this sale are rendered in three very different styles from the artist's oeuvre.

It was Bose's portrayal of rural India without dependence on Western models that captured the attention of Gandhi and catapulted Bose to the status of national icon as the only artist patronized by Gandhi.
