Monotype in black ink on laid paper, attached to China paper along the left sheet edge, with the artist's blue-grey signature stamp (Lugt 658) in the lower right margin, Béraldi's inkstamp (L. 230) on verso of the print, Degas's red oval atelier stamp (L. 657) on verso of China paper, with full margins, in good condition aside from a skillfully repaired small thinned spot upper right sheet edge, uneven mat and light-staining, framed.

This monotype forms part of the series of works executed by Degas to illustrate La Famille Cardinal by Ludovic Halévy, 1880-1883. One impression of this monotype is in the collection of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University. This monotype was in the collection Henri Béraldi (1849-1931), who was an important print and book collector, president of the Société des Arnis des Livres, co-author, with Baron Roger Portalis of Les Gravures du Dix-Huitieme Siècle (1880), and the publisher of Les Gravures du XIX Siècle. Guide de l'amateur d'estampes modernes (12 vols.)(1885-1892).
