1985 Renault R5 Turbo 2
Chassis no. VF1822000F0000148
Belying the conventional wisdom that there's no substitute for cubic inches, the Renault 5 Turbo burst onto the scene in 1980. The turbocharging revolution was in full swing, as the fuel crises of the 1970s accelerated development of more economical means of power delivery.
Renault's objectives in this realm were clearly focused towards competition. The front-drive R5 hatchback broke the barrier in the WRC, giving serious competition to the rear-drive cars. It was, however, compromised in power, even with its tuned, Alpine-badged 93bhp engine.
Thus came the R5 Turbo, not merely an exhaust-boosted front-wheel drive rocket but a wolf in sheep's clothing. Power came from a 1,397cc turbocharged "Cléon" engine, installed amidships behind the driver's seat. Although built in an R5 shell, mechanically the car was completely different. In standard form it delivered 160hp; the first 400 cars were homologated for FIA Group 4 racing. Power was successively pushed to 185, then 210 horsepower, and more in a "Maxi" version. Jean Ragnotti won the Monte Carlo Rally on the car's first WRC outing. A less-expensive version, named "Turbo 2," was introduced at the 1982 Paris show. The interior was standard R5, and electric windows were available.
The Turbo 2 was never regularly imported, but Sun International Racing, specialists in small manufacturer qualification and niche market importations, brought in a few as "gray market" cars.
Showing only 36,000 miles from new, this 1986 Renault 5 Turbo 2 is a factory 185bhp version and was imported by Sun International Racing. Most importantly, it is California Certified and registered, displaying the required California BAR sticker.
Fitted with polished Gotti wheels, this R5 benefits from several sensible upgrades designed to make the car significantly more user friendly. These include a stainless steel heim joint shift linkage, remote oil filter with stainless steel lines and AN fittings, stainless steel brake lines, a second cooling fan and a Halon fire suppression system.
Complete with its original owners manual and a selection of service records, this low-mileage rally car for the road is sure to impress its next owner with its aggressive looks and legendary road manners. Sold on a Certificate of Title.
