Pair of Carved Achroite Tourmaline Hummingbirds
By Peter Mueller
Brazil

A scarce and valuable form of elbaite tourmaline, achroite is the colorless to near colorless variety. It is seen here carved in the form of a pair of hummingbirds, graduating from near colorless at the tips of the wings to a deeper shade of blue in the body and tail. Each bird is accented with rubellite tourmaline cabochon eyes and a carnelian beak. They sit delicately perched upon an inverted Brazilian rock crystal quartz cluster, on a square rock crystal base, height 8in.
