Footnotes

  • One of the founding firms of the British motor industry, Daimler was part of the expanding BSA group by 1911. By this time the adoption of the refined 'Silent Knight' sleeve-valve engine had done much to turn around the company's fortunes and establish Daimler as a marque committed to engineering excellence, a policy which continued in the 1920s with the introduction of the 'Double-Six' – Britain's first V12. Its traditional characteristics had long endeared the marque to the nobility, and indeed, in pre-war years the company's products were preferred by the British Royal Family to those of rivals Rolls-Royce.
For the 1927 season Daimler offered five different chassis ranging from the imperious 7.1-litre types O, P, and W, to the smallest of the line-up: the Type L. Intended for the wealthy owner-driver - the chassis price was £490 - the Type L was powered by a 1,872cc sleeve-valve six driving via a three-speed gearbox, a combination that delivered a top speed of around 60mph and fuel consumption in the region of 28 miles per gallon.
This Daimler 16/55 was purchased from VCC stalwart, Johnny Thomas and has been in use recently as a wedding car. It has been fitted with a large, six-cylinder, overhead-valve engine of unknown make (possibly Austin) and is said to run well. Described as in generally good condition, apart from a leaking radiator, the car is offered with current road fund licence and Swansea V5 document. It is expected that further information regarding its history will be available by time of sale.
