Launched in 1974, the Golf represented a complete break with Volkswagen tradition, yet would prove as big a sales success as its Beetle predecessor. Marketed in the USA as the 'Rabbit', the Giugiaro-styled Golf adopted the now orthodox, transverse engine/front-wheel drive layout and came with a choice of Audi-developed 1.1- or 1.5-litre overhead-camshaft engines, with diesels following later. Possessing excellent performance and handling, practical accommodation and boxy good looks, the Golf was a runaway success with around 10 million of all types sold by the end of the 1980s. Introduced in 1984, the enlarged MkII version boasted an improved and extended range of engines equipped with self-adjusting hydraulic tappets and electronic ignition from late 1985. This automatic transmission Golf MkII was supplied new by Humberside Motors, Newport, Brough and first registered in March 1989 to Robin Terry, of Melbourne, York, the registration number at that time being '6715 R'. A 1.6-litre model, the car has covered a guaranteed mileage of less than 14,000 from new, while the accompanying service booklet records nine services by Humberside Motors to 12.07.95 at 7,435 miles. This well-preserved modern classic is offered with MoT to November 2011 and Swansea V5.
