1938 BSA 496cc Empire Star
Registration no. 2315 DU
Frame no. JM19 2434
Engine no. JM23 810
During the 1930s BSA concentrated on producing a range of dependable, well-made, competitively priced motorcycles. The firm's single-cylinder range was redesigned by Val Page for 1937, the engines taking on many of the characteristics they would retain in the post-war era, most notably dry-sump lubrication, rear-mounted magneto and that distinctively shaped timing cover. There were two new overhead-valve offerings in the 500 class: the M22 Sports and M23 Empire Star. Their new engines were housed in conventional cycle parts and drove via four-speed gearboxes, both of which benefited from the convenience of foot change.
Owned by the current vendor - an enthusiastic VMCC member - for 32 years, the Empire Star we offer is wonderful example of this rare overhead-valve model. Restored over a period of three years in the early 1980s and maintained and used regularly since completion, '2315 DU' has taken part in many VMCC events and has completed various Coventry to Brighton runs in the hands of its long term owner. Described as being in good condition throughout, the machine is offered with assorted maintenance and other related documentation, current MoT/tax and Swansea V5C document. A wonderful opportunity to acquire a good example of this fast, powerful and highly sought after BSA sports roadster.
