Footnotes

  • Just as it had done 21 years previously with the revolutionary 'Traction Avant', Citroën stunned the world again in 1955 with the launch of the strikingly styled 'DS'. Beneath the shark-like newcomer's aerodynamically efficient, low-drag bodyshell there was all-independent, self-levelling, hydro-pneumatic suspension; plus power-operated brakes, clutch and steering. No European car would match the DS's ride quality for several years, the fundamental soundness of Citroën's ahead-of-its-time hydro-pneumatic suspension being demonstrated by its survival in present-day top-of-the-range models. The DS's original 1,911cc, overhead-valve, long-stroke engine was replaced in 1966 by a short-stroke 1,985cc unit, also available in 2,175cc and 2,347cc versions, while other DS developments included swivelling headlights, fuel injection and a five-speed gearbox.
Other models offered alongside the original DS were the ID (a simplified, cheaper version), the cavernous Safari estate and the two-door Décapotable (convertible), the latter boasting coachwork by Henri Chapron. Right-hand drive versions were assembled in England at Citroën's Slough factory.
After 32 years with its first owner in Lille, this left-hand drive DS21 came to the UK and was sold to an artist living in London. A desirable five-speed manual transmission model, it was then bought early in 2005 by an elderly gentleman. The latter had owned and restored five DS models since 1970 and proceeded to strip this car ready for sympathetic restoration. Many new parts were fitted including the brakes, clutch, exhaust system, water pump, etc (see bills for over £3,800 on file). The car was fully re-sprayed by the Hereford Low Bake Centre and is finished to show standard in its original grey metallic livery, with the addition of the roof being repainted in black. The original mustard velour interior has been cleaned rather than re-upholstered with the exception of the rear seat back, which had faded in the sunlight and was replaced with matching material.
This beautiful and highly desirable classic Citroën has had only three private owners from new and currently displays a believed-correct total on the odometer of only 94,000 kilometres (approximately 58,300 miles). The car comes with current MoT, Swansea V5 and a most substantial file of history relating to its time both in France and the UK, including a detailed list of all restoration work carried out. Recently serviced, it is running very smoothly and quietly, is in generally very good condition and ready to be enjoyed.
