Footnotes

  • Maserati's 1966 introduced 2-seater Ghibli employed a shortened Mexico chassis and stunning Ghia bodywork penned by their in-house stylist Giugiaro. Most of the 1274 built in Modena between 1966 and 1973 were fastback coupes, only 125 being open cars. A 330bhp 4.7-litre V8 was fitted until 1970, when it was replaced by a 4.9 which actually produced only 5 more bhp.
As confirmed by Ermannono Cozza, Consulenza Storica at Maserati S.p.A 12 January 2009, Maserati Ghibli AM 115 1528 was the subject of a purchase order dated 21 July 1970 from Maserati dealers I.M.I Inc of Wilshire Boulevard, Beverely Hills, California, for their client property developer and home building tycoon Randall E Presley at his business address in Newport Beach. Specified optional equipment of power steering, AM/FM radio and spare parts kit, the 4.7-litre fixed head coupe was to be collected from the Italian factory by the customer who would be in Europe to pick up the car in September of that year. A copy of the Certificato D'Origine from Maserati archives confirms that 115 1528 was indeed 'sold factory new' 10 September 1970 to Mrs Cecilia De Mille Presley, Grand Daughter of legendary Hollywood movie director Cecile B De Mille. A copy of a California Certificate of Title indicates that in January 1987, the car was still resident in the Sunshine State, whilst an HM Revenue and Customs Duty Slip following importation records arrival in the UK 20 November 2008.
At some point, rebuilding commenced which has never been completed, and, today, the De Mille Presley car should be regarded as an incomplete project in mid-restoration. For while the part-refurbished body panels and interior would appear to be largely present, the 4710cc engine is currently out of the car and fully dismantled, and the gearbox is not present. Indeed, potential buyers are strongly advised to satisfy themselves as to exactly what components are included with the vehicle in the various boxes in the auction tent and, importantly, which parts are not. Potentially rewarding when completed, Maserati Ghibli 115 1328 is sold strictly as seen.
