A decorated gourd, umeke pawehe, Hawaiian Islands
height 3 1/2in; diameter 5in
with old label affixed to the underneath surface reading: "Hawaiian Calabash No. 16"
Decorated gourd bowls umeke pawehe were originally made on Niihau, where decorated mats were also made, but later spread to all the islands. The descriptive word pawehe was applied to geometrical decoration on both gourds and mats. The decoration consisted of lines and geometrical figures in the natural color of the gourds set in a dark background. (Buck 1957:36)
