Footnotes

  • The Time Ball Buildings in Leeds are one of the city's most celebrated architectural attractions. It was here, on Leeds' principal shopping street, that John Dyson (1844 - 1914) established his firm of Jewellers and Watchmakers in 1871/2. Shortly afterwards, both a clock and a time ball were mounted on the building's frontage, and the premises has been known as the Time Ball Buildings ever since. Part of a growing need to establish a standard time across England - a development made crucial by the increasing importance of the railway - the time ball (literally a painted wooden or metal sphere) was synchronised with Greenwich time and 'dropped' every day at 1pm, enabling the residents and tradesmen of Leeds to set their watches. In 1910, another clock was mounted on the shop's frontage to celebrate the birthday of John Dyson's wife. Dyson & Sons Ltd. remained in the buildings until 1990, since when it has housed two restaurants, and is now part of the Marriott Hotel.

Please note that viewing of this lot is by appointment only.

Lots 672, 781, 782 & 783 have also been removed from the Time Ball Buildings.
