ARUNDEL (THOMAS, Earl of) Document signed
Document signed ("Arrundell & Surrey"), being "The Demise from the Right Honourable Thomas Earle of Arundall & Surrey Earle Marshall of England & Paul, Viscount Bayning to Simon Wells gent of 58: acres 3: roodes & 26 perches of Land" comprising three marshes in Halvergate, Wickhampton, Moulton and Freethorpe [Norfolk], signed by Arundel's fellow lessee Paul, Viscount Bayning, on one skin of vellum, two pendant seal, two small water stain in left-hand margin, approximately 515 x 710 mm., 21 May [1628]

  • An attractive document signed by the great collector soon after he had been released from the Tower and restored to royal favour with Charles I. It dates from the year of Seldon's Marmora Arundeliana and probably the year before the famous portraits of him by Rubens. His fellow signatory, Lord Bayning, was son of Paul Bayning, a controversial merchant adventurer (see the ODNB).
