Footnotes

  • Dr. William Maris Wilson (1805-1872) was Attending Physician at Bloomingdale Asylum, 1839-1844. His portrait is included in "The 128th Annual report for The Society of the New York Hospital" pub, 1898.

In 1815 The Society of the New York Hospital began looking for a suitable location to build a facility for their mental health patients and chose a site in "Bloomingdale", a catch-all term for territory on the west side of Manhattan. The asylum opened in 1821. At the time it was the only hospital in the state caring for the mentally ill. The grounds of the asylum were elegantly laid out with walks and gardens. Farming and gardening were considered therapeutic, so there was a working farm with orchards, vegetable gardens, barns and pasture land.
