Footnotes

  • Provenance: Lady Lowther, Lightwood, Lightwood Green, Overton

The underside of this table bears a chalk instruction reading 'Deliver to Lady Lowther, Lightwood, Lightwood Green, Overton' and almost certainly refers to a member of the Lowther family of nearby Erbistock Hall. The Lowthers - formerly of Swillington, Yorkshire - were descended through Sir William (1612 - 1688), the youngest son of Sir John Lowther of Westmoreland. William amassed most of his fortune during the Civil War, when he spent some time in Holland.
