  • In 1905 White led the first mission to Bhutan since the 1860s. The purpose was to invest Ugyen Wang-Chuk, Tongsa Penlop with a K.C.I.E in recognition of his help at Lhasa during the Tibet Mission of the previous year. White travelled from Gangtok via the Chumbi Valley to the capital at Poonakha. Gorina Monastery is near Paro. This image was included in J.C White, Sikhim & Bhutan, Longmans (1909) facing p.122.
