1908 Olympic Games Referee's medal, to obverse with angelic figure inscribed 'ELIS ATHENS PARIS ST LOUIS LONDON IN COMMEMORATION OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES HELD IN LONDON 1908', the reverse with 2 figures in a chariot pulled by 4 horses. Awarded to referee J.H.Stapley. Produced by Vaughton and Sons of Birmingham, Size approx. 51mm diam, in original box embossed to lid with 'OLYMPIC GAMES REFEREE LONDON 1908' together with an associated circular medal to obverse 'National Cyclists Union' with shield, to reverse inscribed 'PRESENTED TO Mr J.H.STAPLEY FOR HONARARY SERVICES SEPTEMBER 1908.' hallmarked, 15ct gold, approx. 23mm diam, ring suspension with pin. A circular medal to obverse 'PUTNEY ATHLETIC CLUB', to reverse 'RACING MEMENTO W.J.PETTS RECORD RIDES AUG.-SEPT. 1908', hallmarked, silver, ring suspension.   • W.J.Petts was aged 34 at the 1908 Olympics and was pacemaker for the 2 British Cyclists who finished in the Gold and Silver positions, finishing 4th himself. He was a dedicated competitor and carried on racing into his seventies.
