Footnotes

  • Literature:
First published in Man About Town, May 1961, feature titled 'The Secrets Of An Agent'

Another print of this image was exhibited at The Museum of London, The Eye That Never Sleeps - Terence Donovan Photographs of London, 17 March - 1 August 1999.

Man About Town magazine - the brainchild of John Taylor, one of the most influential journalists of his generation - can be seen as Britain's first modern consumer style title for men. Launched as a quarterly in 1952, the original magazine was considered funny, off-beat and original in format, with cartoons by Heath, Calman and Scarfe. It became a cult success, embracing the trends of the time (especially the 'Swinging Sixties', when its popularity peaked) and headlining topics that men were seen to want to read about: fine wines, good food, beautiful women and entertaining company.
