Footnotes

  • Since 1993, Izima Kaoru has been immersed in the project Sitai no aru hukei (Landscapes with a Corpse). He challenges models and actresses to act out for him their fantasy of a perfect death, which he then brings to realisation in a sequence of images, normally four or five, beginning with a long shot and ending with a close-up. In this series, Kaoru foregrounds Oriental and Western obsessions with death and mortality, bringing together beauty and horror in an unsettling juxtaposition. Simultaneously, he references the transitory world of high fashion, with its ideals of perfection and youth - ideals that cannot match the model's personal vision of perfection in death.
