Footnotes

  • Raoul M. de Longpre, Fils also known as Maucherat de Longpre was born in 1843. He was the son of Jean-Antoine-Marie-Victor and Marie-Therese Pinchaud de Longpre and the brother of Paul de Longpre (1855-1911), an important major flower painter, who eventually settled in Hollywood, California. Raoul chose to remain in France.

Raoul devoted a lifetime to the scientific as well as artistic study of flowers, with a particular concentration on lilacs and roses. He began his training in Lyon, and then traveled to Paris in 1877; by 1880 he began to exhibit at the Paris Salon, and his works found buyers in the United States. In 1883, an article in the Rocky Mountain News noted that a painting of Roses and Lilacs by Raoul was on exhibition in Denver, Colorado.

Like other 19th century flower painters, Raoul was undoubtedly aware of "language of flowers" literature; e.g. his lilacs, often white, may indicate the sentiment of youthful innocence.

Today, works by Raoul M. de Longpre, Fils are owned by American private as well as public collectors such as the National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C., the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation in Pittsburgh, PA, and the Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum in Rochester, New York.
