Anne Redpath, OBE RSA ARA LLD ARWS ROI RBA (British, 1895-1965)
Cagnes signed 'Anne Redpath' (lower left) oil on panel 66 x 61cm (26 x 24in). in the artist's original frame
PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist, and by descent Redpath exhibited views of Cagnes-Sur-Mer, near Nice, at the RSA in 1938, and at the RGI the following year. She was always interested in the relationship between architectural form and landscape, and hill towns proved perfect for these compositions as she could flatten the picture space and concentrate on design, geometry and abstract form. This is one of her first major 'hill town' oils, realised in the characteristic chalky palette of the period.
