With the Fine Art Society, Aug 1970.
LITERATURE: Caw, Sir J, 'William McTaggart', Glasgow, 1917, p267.
McTaggart spent August 1894 in Cockenzie/Port Seton, a few miles east of Edinburgh. Aside from Carnoustie, it was his favourite sketching place on the east coast and he relished the harbour, light effects and distinctive brownish water of the estuary. Caw considers 1894 "perhaps the most strenuous and fruitful in his whole career. In splendid form...the pictures which date from it number over thirty. Moreover the great majority were fairly important, and nearly all show him at or near his best." (p131).
The view looks west and shows Arthur's Seat in the background.
