  • This subject bears close comparison to 'Andro wi' his cutty gun', fig 8 in Lindsay Errington's catalogue (NGS, 1987).
    This may be the picture of the given title Errington notes was well reviewed in 1809:
    "composed with great delicacy and judgement, well drawn and admirably coloured, somewhat in the style and manner of Wilkie, our Scots Teniers" (ibid p5).
    The impressive draughtsmanship and Dutch influence would seem to suggest a relatively early date.
