Jiang Guo Fang graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and subsequently taught at the Central Drama Arts School. He was awarded the Beijing Blue ribbon at the 6th National Arts Exhibition. His works have been collected by the Hong Kong Museum, as well as institutions and private individuals globally. Jiang Guo Fang's works have been exhibited internationally in several solo shows from Hong Kong to Rome. He was the first contemporary artist to have a one-man show presented at the Forbidden City, Beijing in 2004.
The present work was painted in 1995. Our website shows an image of the artist signing the work in that year. This just proceeds his major exhibition 'The Forbidden City' shown at Schoeni Art Gallery, Hong Kong. The Forbidden City , a city within a city was constructed in Beijing early in the 15th century as home to the Ming and Qing emperors. In his 'Forbidden City' series, as in the current work, the artist creats an evocative interpretation of the now mainly ruined palace complex placing his sitters in the costume of past imperial rule.
