A very rare Meissen teabowl and saucer
circa 1715-20
Decorated in gilding and silver in the workshop of Georg Funcke in Dresden, each with a border of strap and foliate scrollwork enclosing flower-heads with trailing dots, the reverse of each rim with a border of foliate scrollwork, the teabowl with six flower sprigs around the footrim and a floral motif on the underside, the saucer with an eight-pointed star in the centre and the teabowl with a five-pointed star, the saucer: 12.5cm diam.; the teabowl: 4.3cm high (silver oxidised) (2)

    The service sold from the collections of the Margraves and Grand Dukes of Baden - the only recorded examples of this decoration - comprised six teabowls and saucer, an octagonal sugar box and cover, a slop bowl and a teapot and cover. Another of the teabowls and saucers is now in the Arnhold Collection, New York (Cassidy-Geiger 2008, no. 66).
