A very rare Meissen circular dish from the Japanese Palace
circa 1730
Painted in Imari style in underglaze-blue, enamels and gilding with a flower vase in the centre enclosed by an underglaze-blue-ground gilt trellis band reserved with flower heads, the gilt-edged rim with alternating flower vases and foliate devices within an underglaze-blue line, the reverse with four flower panels divided by gilt flowers on an underglaze-blue ground, an underglaze-blue trellis band around the footrim, 25cm diam., crossed swords mark within a circle, and x inside footrim, in underglaze-blue

    The 1770 inventory of the Japanese Palace records: 'Zwölf große Teller, mit überschlagenen vergoldteten Rande, innwendig mit einem Blumen-Topf und vergoldten Ravadien (?) Granz, á la mosaique gemahlt, 1. Zoll tief, 10 1/2. Zoll in Diam. No. 2 (twelve large plates, with everted (?) gilt rims, painted on the inside with a flower pot and a gilt Ravadien (?) wreath, á la mosaique) (quoted by Boltz 1996, p. 71).

    A single dish of this type remains in the historic porcelain collection in the Zwinger in Dresden, and another is in the Hoffmeister Collection.
