Spanish Pulpit set
A "Spanish Pulpit" bone chess set,
England or Russia, 18th century,
one side stained brown, the other side left natural, kings and queens with feathered galleries and wearing hats, bishops as clerics wearing mitres, knights as horses' heads within galleries, rooks as turrets, pawns with baluster knops and tear-drop shaped finials (two white pawns restored),
the king 10cm high, the pawn 5.2cm high.

  • The origin of the mysterious "Spanish Pulpit" set remains unclear. Sensible suggestions have included the source of origin as Archangel. But the majority of sets turn up in England, and some have been included in early 19th century inventories. See Michael Mark, figure 34.
