  • Reference: Fine Mechanical Music and Scientific Instruments, Bonhams, 18 November 2008, p.5, lot 2, for lighter oak version.

The guarantee card disc attached to the lid key, bears the name Times, who were an Essex-based retailer of furniture and fittings. Contrary to recent loose speculation, this key is the original to the gramophone with the same thumb-grip pattern seen on several keys fitting the 460 HMV models.

Saleroom notices

  • The key for the lid lock is not an HMV supplied key and therefore a later accessory. The printed footnote to this lot is now invalid. The estimate has been revised to £5,800-6,200
