Marie de Bretagne d'Avaugour, Duchesse de Montbazon (1610-1657), wearing blue dress with white lace collar, pearl necklace, pearl and emerald pendent earrings, her hair dress with pearls and a pink plume.
Enamel, inscribed on the counter-enamel with sitter's name, gilt-metal frame with border of white enamel dots.

  • Marie de Bretagne d'Avaugour was hailed as one of the most beautiful and notorious women of her time. She was the daughter of Claude Avaugour, Count of Vertus and Catherine Fouquet de La Varenne. Marie married Hercule de Rohan, Governor of Paris, Prince of Guéméné and Duke of Montbazon on the 5th March 1628, the same year that his first wife, Madeleine de Lenoncourt had passed away. He was forty-two years Marie's senior and they had three children, Marie Eléonore, François and Anne.
