Footnotes

  • The present lot is after the portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, painted in 1784 and published as mezzotint by Samuel Williams Reynolds in 1833.

Mary Helen Graham married Sir Henry Watkin Dashwood, 3rd Bt (1745–1828) on 17th July 1780. Her husband was MP for Wigtown Burghs between 1775 and 1780. In 1775 his debts had amounted to £25,000 which his father had to pay. After he came into his inheritance, Dashwood sold most of the family estate to pay further debts. He held the (unpaid) appointment of Gentleman of the Privy Chamber from March 1783 until his death.
