A Great War D.C.M. and dated Bar group of four to Private H.L.Swan, Queen's Regiment,
Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (9222 Pte H.L.Swan. 2/The Queen's Regt), with bar dated (25th September 1915); 1914 Star with gilded Mons bar (L-9222 Pte H.L.Swan. 2/The Queen's R.); British War and Victory (L-9222 Pte H.L.Swan. The Queen's R.). Mounted as worn. Good very fine. (4)

    For conspicuous gallantry on 16th and 17th May, 1915, at Festubert. On several occasions Private Swan voluntarily went out over the parapet to rescue wounded Officers and men, and showed the greatest bravery and determination under heavy fire.

    Bar to the D.C.M. London Gazette 11.3.1916.

    For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Lance Corporal Wood and Privates Barrett and Swan collected wounded under very heavy shell and rifle fire, repeatedly and without any orders going out over the trenches to look for more.

    Private H.L.Swan was from Rowledge, near Farnham. He joined the Army on 17.6.1908, he served at Gibraltar, Bermuda, and had had eight months in South Africa before the outbreak of the war. He went straight to France as a stretcher-bearer.

    The lot comes with a cap badge, brass bedplate and the History of the Queen's Royal Regiment Volume VII with maps, an Order of Service for the Tercentenary Monument unveiling, newspaper cutting relating to his service and presentation of a watch, an Order of Service held in Guildford on 31.5.1919.

    The Queen's Royal West Surry Regiment were awarded a total of 155 DCM's and 3 Bars.

    Of the 3 bars awarded both Private H.L.Swan and CSM T.C.Filby were both gazetted on the same day, whilst the third a C.S.M. J.Willy was gazetted on the 16.1.1919.

    Approximately 53 dated bars were awarded, this being up until 15th Spetember, although this lot changes the original date, an order for 500 bars was placed on 4th December 1916 these being the new laurelled version. See British Gallantry Awards by P.E.Abbott and J.M.A.Tamplin, page 77.
