Footnotes

  • Wise & Greenwood invented a new type of lighter mechanism after Greenwood lost an arm in the war and was unable to light a cigarette on his own. They revolutionised the pocket lighter by setting the wheel horizontally rather than vertically, thus allowing it to be lit with one hand. In 1923 they registered their mark at the London Assay office but by 1926 Dunhill had an agreement with Wise & Greenwood to act as their agent worldwide. From circa 1928 onwards the Dunhill mark can be found on the lighters produced.
