Footnotes

  • This bronze is a reduction of Canova's important marble composition which is now in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome. Canova worked on the original marble over a period of twenty years, finally revealing the group in 1815 to great acclaim. The scene depicts one of the Labours of Hercules; when Lichas, a mere messenger, brings to Hercules a poison shirt from Deianara. In his rage Hercules throws the man into the sea to his death.
