During their time in Paris, the Barbers lived in the same apartment block as Goncharova and acquired a number of her works, including the present lot. On his return to England, Barber embarked on a successful career as a novelist and Goncharova appears as a background character in such novels as The Weeping and the Laughter (Hodder & Stoughton, 1988). Barber also published a factual account of his meetings with artists in Paris in a book entitled Conversations with Painters (Collins, 1964).

We are grateful to Dr. Anthony Parton for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
