The young girl in this painting is the same wide-eyed beauty depicted in The Little Seamstress, sold in these rooms in The Russian Sale, 27 November 2006, lot 27. The poise of the young sitter is heightened by the delicate manner in which she cradles the basket of grapes on her lap, her stillness and grace synonymous with the idea of youth as a blessing and a bounty.
