Footnotes

  • The offered lot is a preliminary study for a lithograph by Karl Petrovich Beggrov (1799-1875) published by A. Pluchart in the series Vidy Sankt Peterburga i ego okrestnostey initiated by The Society for the Encouragement of Artists in 1822. Beggrov worked from original watercolours which were the collaborative work of two artists: Karl Friedrich Sabat (1782-1843), who painted architectural detail, and Samuel (Solomon) Schiflar (1786-1841), who painted figures.

The view represents one of the most important streets of the former capital city, with two impressive wings of the Assignatsyonny Bank designed by Quarenghi on the left, and the Apraxin and Shchukin commercial market buildings on the right. The final lithograph differs from this preliminary watercolour in some respects, namely that the published work is full of people and bustle, whereas the watercolour shows relatively little movement in the street, although the architecture is identical in both works. The offered lot affords an interesting insight into the process by which the scene was created, which is eliminated in the lithograph, whereby Sabat would first draw the architecture, with Schiflar subsequently imposing his figures. This is particularly noticeable on the right-hand side of the work and in some parts of the background where one can clearly see the contours of buildings within some of the figures.
