Samuel John Lamorna Birch, R.A., R.W.S., R.W.A. (British, 1869-1955)
Bathing Pond, Pedn-e-Vounder signed 'S.J Lamorna Birch' (lower left) oil on canvas 47 x 64 cm. (18 1/2 x 25 1/4 in.)
PROVENANCE: With Ian MacNicol, Glasgow
Pedn-e-Vounder is located close to Lands End and was a popular Cornish spot for Birch to paint at during the 1920s. For an artist, the place is probably at it's best at the turn of the tide. The sands there are beautifully flat and as the tide returns there are marvellous reflections in the shallow water which settles in dark green pools under the cliffs. Pedn-e-Vounder was responsible for inspiring some of Birch's earliest etched work in 1929. There are many variations applied in the spelling of Pedn-e-Vounder and Birch himself was not consistent.
