Footnotes

  • An unusually clean copy of the first edition of the official account of Anson's circumnavigation of the world, which has "long occupied a distinguished position as a masterpiece of descriptive travel" (Hill). Anson's expedition, during which six of his fleet's vessels were sunk and an estimated thousand of his crew lost to scurvy, was undertaken to attack Spanish possessions in South America at the outbreak of war between Britain and Spain in 1739. Despite the disasters which befell Anson, he succeeded in curtailing enemy activities in the Pacific and capturing a lucrative galleon at Manila. See illustration overleaf.
