MENDELSSOHN BARTHOLDY (FELIX)
Autograph letter signed ("Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy"), in German, to Aloys Fuchs of Vienna, written just after having risen from his sickbed and preparing to depart for for London, sending him a parcel of manuscripts for his collection, care of the publishers Artaria: "It contains: a canon of Rossini with the words: Pour Monsieur Fuchs par J. Rossini, and besides another sketch for a Stabat Mater, which he is just now composing, in his hand. This is rather interesting and although without his signature, you will easily recognize his hand... There are besides manuscripts by Hiller, Liszt, Herz, Adam, Carulli, Karr, and Tolbecque, all with their signatures. I would have liked to send you more and better things but as I told you, it was not possible; with the autograph address panel on the verso, postmarked, one page, tipped onto an album leaf with tape at the left hand edge, 4to, [Paris], postmarked 20 April 1832

Footnotes

  • MENDELSSOHN ON COLLECTING MUSICAL AUTOGRAPHS: this is the third letter in the series by Mendelssohn to the musicologist and collector Aloys Fuchs published in Mendelssohn and his World, edited by R. Larry Todd, 1991: "Fuchs counted Mendelssohn's friendship among the greatest honours and treasures of his life. Mendelssohn, who made his acquaintance during his sojourn in Vienna un August, 1830, inspected Fuch's collection with great interest at that time, and volunteered to help with it to the best of his ability. The enriching of this collection through manuscripts or portraits is the main theme of the correspondence we have before us" (op.cit., p.277). Fuchs was generous in allowing Mendelssohn access to his treasures: "the numerous catalogues which he compiled of works (by Gluck, Haydn, Mozart and others) were epoch-making and even now retain their value as sources" (Othmar Wessely, Grove Music Online).
