Footnotes

  • "I AM FAR FROM LIKING IT ALL" – JOSEPH JOACHIM ON TRISTAN AND ISOLDE: "How could I know that you wanted to hear Operas, when you were on a trip for fresh air in the fields! The Repertoire of the Munic Theater was advertised for months...It is too late now to mend, for they don't repeat 'Tristan' which Opera is certainly one of the most interesting modern productions in musical art, although I am sorry to say I am far from liking it all. You will, however, certainly have an opportunity of hearing other Operas of Wagner at Munic in excellent performances". The great Wagnerian conductor Hermann Levi had been appointed Hofkapellmeister at Munich in 1872.
