Footnotes

  • Provenance: purchased from Spink & Son Ltd., London on 8 January 1988

Compare a similar pair of white jade boxes in the form of pomegranates, from the Pine and Bamboo Hall collection, with the sides of the box similarly following the contours of the fruit, illustrated in Virtuous Treasures. Chinese Jades for the Scholar's Table, Hong Kong, 2007, Catalogue no.58, where it is suggested that the boxes may have been used to contain cosmetics in an Imperial Palace compound.
